I don’t hate Porsche owners, I swear. But Porsche itself does hate them. See, the 911 S/T is an example of why. We’ve seen Porsche try to attack every niche with the 911 and all of its sub-models, but we’ve also seen shameless attacks on their slick-holed customer base like the 911 R too. I’m not saying I wouldn’t buy them myself, but not in the speculative market we live in regardless of my means. Limited models nowadays of any car is a way to guarantee some dealers will try and rip off the customers. This isn’t to say that these customers are forgiven for being dumb enough to pay a marked up price to be the first one on the block with some “low production” gimmick.
See, in my perfect world we’d be watching some idiots competing in submission grappling outside of Porsche dealerships. In fact, since the 911 S/T is oh-so special you should sign a waiver and stick fight to the death outside your local Porsche retailer for an allotment. Better yet, sanctioned allotment fighting might be the next new combat sports promotion if I have my way. The want people have for this shit is baffling, but even at almost $300k you’re just asking for every speculative asswipe in the world ready to put money down to either fleece some dork in a PCA jacket or be seen on the internet in the damned thing.
And here is another big thing, there’s no doubt the 911 S/T is probably a great experience. The GT3 RS bones and lack of extra aero stuff paired with a manual sounds like a great experience, just not a fucking $300k one. And that’s where I get to Porsche hating its customer base, why is this car $50k more than a GT3 RS? Why limit it to 1963 examples if you know it’ll be popular? Why will they let dealers mark them up to exorbitant numbers? Because Porsche has true disdain for the people who’ll come for the same asshole-reaming every time the market tells them something is special.
I know if Porsche stayed the same company it was 25 years ago, we probably wouldn't even be talking about them right now. But nothing about what they do today from a sales standpoint is okay aside from offering the 911 and 718 to the masses. Their profit margin is obscene for this industry for them to mostly be selling us warmed over Audi platforms. Porsche has a thing nowadays about ripping people off and it not only makes me angry it makes me sad for their real customer base. But with all that said, hopefully the 1963 folks that do get their hands on the S/T will enjoy the cars, but are conscious that there is nothing cool or smart about being the first in a market like this one.
